A Dreaded Sunny Day / So I Meet You At The Cemetery Gates
On the way back from the Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix, we stopped at the Symonds St cemetery. What an amazing piece of Auckland history, hidden away by Grafton bridge and the Southern motorway. Urban decay at its overgrown, neglected finest.

NY Subway Car Reefs. Great series of images showing the New York Metropolitan Transport Authority’s artifical reef program (yes, they have one!), using old subway cars. And here I was just thinking they were using the ocean as a junkyard!

Christchurch Earthquake damage. Here in New Zealand, we are all still getting our heads around the images from the weekend’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch. This sobering photo captures the scale of the damage perfectly. (via Flickr).

The Right Stuff. NASA have just released a nice set of historic images on Flickr. This is a great shot of John Glenn leaving the crew quarters prior to the Mercury mission which made him the first American to orbit the earth, in February 1962.

ANZAC Day. Today (25th April) in New Zealand and Australia, we commemorate members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. ANZAC Day also now more broadly commemorates all those who died and served in military operations for their countries.

When it comes to this day, despite their subject being American soldiers landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day (6th June 1944), I always think of Robert Capa’s iconic photos. I guess that’s the influence of Spielberg and Hanks coming to bear.

Still, that’s not all bad. Lest we forget.
